Our Story

Who Is TransRockies?

For over two decades, TransRockies has been in the business of building legends.

From the high alpine of the original TransRockies Challenge to the singletrack sanctuaries of Singletrack 6, and the wild, wide-open rock of Moab Rocks, we’ve carved out a reputation for putting on races that leave a mark.

We don’t just put flags in the ground. We create experiences that push your limits, forge community, and stick with you long after the finish line. The Range is the next chapter in that legacy. An epic gravel race set in the rolling foothills west of Claresholm, Alberta.

Who Is The Range?

The first year of The Range was 2020 - the route was discovered by founder Garth Stotts in 2019.

Garth’s Story

“The Range was new to the Alberta Bike calendar in 2020. It started with a simple ride along Willow Creek after a day of camping at Chain Lakes Provincial Park in the summer of 2019. On that twilight ride the wind was still as I soloed out on HWY 533 and then dove down a gravel road that simply said “Stavely”.

I soon crossed over Willow Creek by a single lane truss bridge, on the other side a herd of horses galloped along the side of the road, ushering me on. A few more kms, and another creek crossing teeming with wildlife. On the ridge, 2 Golden Eagles looked down, wondering what was coming through the valley. No cars or riders came along on this road; I was immersed in the nature of the valley as I crossed the creek for the third time. After the ride, I wondered how much better the riding could be if that simple ride were a 10/10! The more I explored the area, the more my inspiration grew and the more I wanted to share the experience. The idea of The Range took hold.

Gravel can bring you some of the most awe inspiring, rewarding cycling experiences anywhere. Forgotten roads take you to remote, often historical, areas. Terrain will challenge your limits. Scenery will connect you with the environment that before may have been foreign.”

The Mission

On Sustainability

We ride wild places. And we believe in leaving them better than we found them.

Here’s how we do our part:

  • Built to Last: Course signs, markers, and infrastructure are reused year after year.

  • Waste Less, Feed More: Leftover food fuels our crew and goes to local food organizations after the event – not the landfill.

  • Local First: From coffee to course tape, we source as much as we can from local businesses that keep the MD of Willow Creek strong and wild.

The goal? Less waste. More good. Simple as that.
